Travel News Round-Up – Outlaws, Bad Laws, and Pillow Fights

Welcome back, fellow travelers! In this week’s round-up our stories seem to be concentrated on the U.S. which I didn’t even plan, but there is a gem at the end that is sure to please! Grab a beverage (hot, cold, or alcoholic) and let’s get started!

  1. The main attraction in Hico, Texas (or perhaps the ONLY attraction in Hico, Texas) has announced they are in possession of some never-before seen photographs of Wm. H. Bonney and Pat Garrett. If you want to prove that Brushy Bill was the infamous (and famous) outlaw, and NOT shot by Garrett in 1881, the Billy The Kid Museum is the place to start your investigation!
  2. Marriott International announced plans to expand by several hundred thousand rooms over the next few years. Already the world’s largest hotel company, expansion of their select-service brands and growth of their recently aquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts are leading the charge. Here’s hoping my rewards points will be usable!
  3. The United States stands to lose $18B in tourism as a result of Trump’s travel ban. The city of Los Angeles stands to lose almost 1 million international visitors over the next three years, for about $736 million in direct spending. The CEO of Discover Los Angeles, Ernest Wooden Jr., annouced that his tourism group will launch an international ad campaign which “invites and welcomes visitors from all corners of the globe.”  For my international readers, I ask that you make every effort to visit America. We aren’t all that bad and there is a lot to see from sea-to-shining-sea!
  4. Java Jog returns to raise at least $75,000 in support of female coffee growers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia. The event takes place in Seattle, Washington, USA on April 21st as part of the Specialty Coffee Association Expo and, even if you can’t be there, consider donating to a team!
  5. Rounding out our list for this week in an international event taking place on Saturday, April 1st. It’s the International Pillow Fight Day! From Amsterdam to Warsaw, this event Is the brainchild of the Urban Playground Movement who has the goal ‘to make these unique happenings in public space become a significant part of popular culture, partially replacing passive, non-social, branded consumption experiences like watching television, and consciously rejecting the blight on our cities caused by the endless creep of advertising into public space.’ Hey, anything that gets people moving and off their devices is fine by me, just don’t smack me in the face with your memory foam bolster pillow!

That is our travel news round-up for this week! What do you think? Did anything catch your eye? Let me know if the comments.
