Travel Quick Shots – Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia

If you are suffering from the seemingly everlasting throes of winter, here are some quick shots of Port Douglas to warm you up. Located in far north Queensland territory and about 40 miles north of Cairns, Port Douglas is a small town perfect as a base for exploration of the Great Barrier Reef, Mossman Gorge, and Daintree Rainforest. Mostly a sleepy fishing village until the tourist boom of the late 1980s, Port Douglas still only has about 4000 permanent residents.

Strolling along the main street of Macrossan, you are almost instantly put in a mellow low-key frame of mind. Near-perfect weather of 76F/24C to 86F/30C and balmy breezes make this an idyllic little place, especially when there are no crowds. From a stroll along 4 Mile Beach to an afternoon spent walking the historic trail, marked by interpretive signs and photographs, you can have a perfectly wonderful visit, even if you never leave town. It literally looked like this every day we were there. Sunny days with bright blue skies and big cottony clouds and clear nights of a million stars. I’ve included 3 shots of wildlife warning signs because you hear stories of how everything in Australia can kill you and it’s kind of true. 🙂 Even funnier (in retrospect and since we weren’t eaten) is that the first night there we went for a midnight walk without flashlights and, the next day, we realized we were wading in the water next to the warning sign. Just goes to show you, flashlights can save lives.
