Round-The-World Airfare Deal – Is It Worth It?

On Wednesday, February 15th the fine folks over at AirfareSpot.com posted an around-the-world (or RTW) airfare deal for $877. That’s quite low considering typical RTW tickets range from $2700 to $10000. The itinerary is JFK-KEF-CDG-IST-DXB-COK-KUL-MNL-JFK, which translates to:

  • New York to Paris with stop in Reykjavik
  • Paris to Dubai with a stop in Istanbul
  • Dubai to Kuala Lumpur with a stop in Cochin
  • Kuala Lumpur to New York (with a looooonnngggg layover in Manila)

The itinerary gives you 2 to 3 days in each place (except the stop cities), which the website states “This travel is more for active people who do not want to spend a lot of time at one place, so we created the route with 2-3 days between flights, which is pretty much enough to have the idea of the country/city.”

I struggle with their use of the word ‘active’ and posit that a better word might be rushed. The connotations seems to imply (to me) that active equals attention-deficit. Active people can literally run through Paris in a day or take 2 weeks to hike the countryside in places like Fontainebleau, La Roche-Guyon, St Germain-en-Laye, or Auvers-sur -Oise.

My other issue is that 2 to 3 days in each of these places is a travesty. You can spend 3 days at the Louvre alone and STILL not see everything. Each destination on this list is overflowing with culture, history, and things to do and such a short time is liable to leave you feeling bereft or making some tough choices of what to skip.

Overall, this is a good deal and, certainly, inspiration for those who favor fast-paced exploration. Just know that you will be rushed, jet-lagged, and likely craving more of the places you’ve been. For more information on this deals, click here.

What do you think? Is this a good deal? Are 2 days enough for your travel style? Let me know in the comments.
