December is here and it is time to focus on giving. We should focus on it year-round, but we’ll get to that. A few years ago, a client introduced me to the good works of Heifer International and since then I’ve been an advocate of their guiding philosophy which promotes self-sufficiency. Their mission is to empower people to change their lives and each donation of each animal gift provides the recipients with training and resources that help them become self-reliant.
I especially like the fact that I can choose to give gifts like coffee, or limited edition items (like the coffee mug shown below), or non-edible animals, like alpaca, goats, and bees, to donate. A hive of bees generate honey that can be sold to create a sustainable income. A flock of chickens provide eggs with much needed protein to undernourished children and the eggs can also be sold. It is a really cool idea so check them out at Heifer.org and see how your gift can change the lives of those who need it most.
Now, back to the ‘giving all year round’ thing. Through Heifer International, you can choose to give through a variety of options including planned giving, monthly giving, and some employers even match your donation. It is an easy way to learn about the world, practice charitable giving, and really make a difference in someone’s life. You can learn more at Heifer.org.
